Make sure you take the time to understand the benefits of an organic mattress

Many of us are thinking about making the transition from a synthetic mattress to an organic mattress.  But let’s face it - organic mattresses are pricey.  However, when you break down the pros and cons and look at the health benefits, investing in an organic mattress is not so extravagant after all.  You can calculate that the average price of an organic mattress may be about 35 cents per day over a period of 20 years. And since we do spend at least one third of our lives sleeping, this is a small investment in our health and well being after all.  But let the buyer beware.  Mattresses labeled as “organic blend” are not fully organic.  Likewise, the label “natural latex” on many mainstream mattress brands does not certify them as natural mattresses.  If you look closely at the materials, you’ll find that most “natural latex” mattresses contain layers of petroleum foam, with only a few inches of actual natural latex. Know the facts about the manufacturers and the materials they use to make their mattresses before you buy.

Consider these Top 5 reasons when considering an organic mattress:

1. Organic mattresses are chemical free

Organic mattresses are primarily comprised of natural latex rubber (made from the sap of rubber trees), organic cotton (harvested from cotton plants that have not been treated with pesticides and agricultural chemicals) and organic wool (sheared from sheep whose wool is not treated with chemicals before or after shearing).  Organic wool is a natural fire repelant.  Synthetic mattresses, on the other hand must use petrochemicals as fire retardents that give off toxic gas.  To learn more about US fire retardant regulations, please see the section entitled “Chemical Info“.   What is unfortunate about the synthetic mattress industry is that although they are required to list the materials used to make the mattress, they are not required to disclose the chemical make up of these materials.  Buying an organic mattress means that you are purchasing a chemically free product that indeed has benefits.

2. Organic mattresses repel dust mites, mold and mildew

The wool in organic wool mattresses has not been stripped of lanolin which is a natural wax. Lanolin is a natural repellant for dust mites, making organic wool mattresses much more resistant to these microscopic nuisances than other traditional mattress types. People suffering from allergies are sometimes sensitive on the feces left by dust mites.  For more information on dust mites, please see the section entitled “Alergens”.

3. Organic mattresses naturally repel moisture from the body

The average person loses about a pint of persperation each night.  During the night, wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in fluids (giving you a drier more comfortable sleep) while during the day, due to its excellent circulation, it evaporates the moisture into air.  On the other hand, synthetic fibres absorb only up to 2% of body moisture during the night and because of its lack of circulation moisture remains trapped inside giving the mattress a clammy feel that only builds up over time.  People suffering from rheumatism or arthritis may be adversely effected by synthetic mattresses as they are sensitive to excess moisture.

4. Organic mattresses provide proper back support

Highly recommended by chiropractors for better back support, natural latex rubber is natually firm, yet form fitting enough to provide proper alignment of your spine.  Organic mattresses easily conform to your body’s shape, minimizing pressure on your joints and back giving you even support, unlike synthetic innerspring mattresses which become uneven over time.

5. Natural latex rubber lasts longer than synthetic rubber

Organic mattresses contain no foams or polyesters to break down or pack down, so your mattress will last longer.  Real natural latex organic mattresses are more durable than synthetic mattresses with a higher lifespan of about 10 to 20 years depending on the manufacturer.  Natural materials simply supply the best combination of materials needed for a healthy sleep!
